Located on the north shore of the Yangtze River, Shibaozhai is 30 kilometers from the east part of Chongqing Zhong county and 190 kilometers away from Chongqing city. As a famous national 4A tourist attraction and a key national cultural protection site, Shibaozhai has been hailed as one of “the new 12 scenic spots of Bayu (Sichuan and Chongqing)”. This place can be easily accessed either by car along the Shanghai-Chengdu Expressway and then across Zhong county or by boat along the Yangtze River. As a tourist attraction sitting atop the mountain with natural scenery of rivers and ancient buildings in the Yangtze River Three Gorges gold tourism belt, Shibaozhai Temple is called Mount Lianyun (“connecting to the clouds”) because its peak towers to the sky and clouds. It’s also known as Mount Jade Seal or Shibao due to its sharp rock cliffs and jade-seal shape.

Shibaozhai Temple, a rarity of fantastic folk architecture in South China, is honored as a pearl in the Yangtze River tourism belt. Surviving with its unique architectural style and rich cultural connotation, it attracts tourists from home and abroad. Many leaders of the CPC (Chinese Communist Party) as well as the State have paid visits to this place.

When the construction of the Three Gorges pushed up the water level to 175 meters, the river would have touched the central front door of the temple. Surrounded by water, Shibaozhai Temple was incompatible to be relocated and replicated in other places due to its unique geographical position; geological structure; peculiar mountain shape; and deep historical, cultural and natural heritage. Therefore, the conservation of Shibaozhai Temple was listed by the State as one of the most important cultural protection projects in the Yangtze River Three Gorges. After a comparative study of experts and with a total investment of 108.97 million yuan ($17.4 million), the protection work of Shibaozhai Temple adopted an in site conservation scheme to fully preserve the original, protect the temple permanently and comprehensively, and ensure its cultural relic value.

With a straight shoreline, a spacious channel, a placid flow and an excellent flow regime, the Shibaozhai tourist dock is suitable for anchoring large ships.

Upon completion of the Three Gorges Reservoir, Shibaozhai Temple has been surrounded by water. It is known as the “little Penglai Island” (a legendary land of Chinese mythology) on the river, "the world's largest bonsai" and "the world’s most beautiful water village". Shibaozhai Temple, the pearl on the Yangtze River gold tourism belt, has been attracting tourists from home and abroad for many years with its unique charm.
