Please prepare euros with face value of 100 or less since most sellers would not like to accept euros of higher face value. Currency exchanges are available in the airport, railway station and downtown tourist area in Brussel. However, the handling charge is higher and there may exist a 10% price difference between the buying rate and the middle rate. Exchange companies include Travelex, Goffin Exchange, D.M.E. Change and Gold & Forex International (GFI), etc.

UnionPay

Domestic Unionpay cards are applicable on all ATMs with Unionpay symbols. Some ATMs of Belgian banks do not accept Unionpay cards, especially in non-tourist areas. Therefore, please dray money from ATMs around the Brussel railway station and airport. The highest amount for single withdrawal is 500 euros and some handling fees would be charged by the bank for each transaction. It is safe to draw money with Unionpay cards so that you do not need to take too much cash with you.

Credit Card

Credit cards are widely used and accepted by most shops. Excluding some small shops (please inquire before payment). For any payment less than 20 euros, they may charge some handling fees. Please prepare some cashes.

Notes

1. Brussel is a safe city on the whole but some areas are not so safe. Please keep yourself away from the following areas at night: Schaarbeek, Brussel North, St-Josse, Marollen, Anneessens, Molenbeek and Anderlecht

2. Please be alert to thieves in tourist areas, railway station and metro station. Sometimes the thieves may pretend to ask about the time or address to divert your attention.

3. Please keep yourself away from the Brussel Midi-Zuid at night. The public security of this area is quite poor at night.

4. 4. Please confirm the price on the menu before ordering because a few restaurants may charge incredibly high prices. A bottle of 1-litre spring water may be sold at the price of 7 euros, which only costs 70 cents in the supermarket.

5. Please be alert when you have dinner in Italian restaurants. Service charges may not be included on the price list in some restaurants. However, it has been included in most Brussel restaurants. Some tourists have been defrauded in some of those restaurants. The price on the menu is much higher than that on the advertisement on the show-window. Therefore, please pay close attention to the price on the menu.
