Jinmen Island is located at the southeast estuary of Fujian and right opposite to Xiamen across the sea, and it has a total area of about 176 square kilometers. It is located in Xiamen Bay in the southeast of Fujian and right opposite to Xiamen Island on the west across Jinxia Strait that is about 5000 meters wide.

It faces Taiwan Strait that is about 150 nautical miles (278 kilometers) on the east. Jinmen has a subtropical monsoon climate with dry weather. It is hot in summer and dry cold in winter with lots of fog in spring, which is quite similar to the weather of Xiamen. Jimen and Xiamen have identical folk customs because of their close proximity to each other. Its main industry is fishing and the inhabitants are hospitable.

The main conventions include Fengshiye and other traditional talismans to keep away bad luck.
