Information

The whitewater kayaking in the 5th National Intercity Games of the People's Republic of China was held in Zhangjiajie Wulingyuan Scenic Spot on October 19, 2003. At the opening ceremony, the State General Administration of Sport announced the Whitewater Slalom Spot to be the Whitewater Slalom Training Base for the 2008 Beijing Olympics, China's first and unique track that meets international standard. It’s another successful case of combination in Zhangjiajie’s eco-tourism with sports.

"Five-City Meeting" Slalom

The Zhangjiajie Slalom Center was designed by Dr. Ramon from Spain, invited by the State General Administration of Sport, and constructed in strict accordance with international standard. The project, with an investment of more than 15 million yuan, commenced in February of 2014. The whole water course is 1,800 meters long, and the track is 310 meters long, 8~10 meters wide and 2 meters deep, with a fall of 7.2 meters in the whole course. The raging rapids with a maximum speed of 15 cubic meters are brought from the mountain streams of the Suoxi Dam and can reach a height of nearly 70 meters. Floating down along the track, sportsmen will get a thrilling experience, and make the audience enjoy the excitement. The torrent-based activity has two types, slalom and wild water.

The slalom activity includes men’s single kayak, single rowing, double rowing and women’s single kayak, which are also events in both the Olympics and the National Games.

"Five-City Meeting" Slalom

The rafting activity includes single, double or more people rafting with boats or rubber dinghies, which takes place in rivers with certain speed and fall. The canoe marathon and canoe polo both fall within the scope of kayaking.

Kayaking is an event in Olympic Games. It was popular in Europe for a long time, until the activity was introduced in Asia in the mid-1930s, during which the kayak was seen on the Pearl River in Guangzhou. In 1974, China joined the International Rowing Federation. China has participated in the World Canoeing Championships five times and some events at the international level from 1975-1980.
