The Thalia Theater is located in the heart of Hamburg between the Inner Alster and Mönckebergstrasse, and it is one of the greatest artistic successes of a state-run German theatre.

The repertoire combines first performances, classics and exciting projects by international artists. The decisive staging by the director along with a strong, highly acclaimed ensemble characterise the artistic profile. In addition to this actors' ensemble, that has been awarded on multiple occasions, the Thalia Theater has been selected as theatre of the year by the jurors of the leading journal of theatrical criticism, "Theater heute"; recently, the Thalia Theater received awards in a number of categories, including "Faust I+II" for best production for 2012, Jens Harzer (2011) and Sebastian Rudolph (2012) as actors of the year and "Immer noch Sturm" by Peter Handke as stage play for 2012.

In 2013, the Thalia Theatre was once again honoured by the magazine: The play "Everyone Dies Alone" directed by Luk Perceval was named "Production of the Year", and Annette Kurz's stage setting as "State Setting of the Year". Both also received the theatre Oscar DER FAUST for their work on this production.

Joachim Lux, director since 2009, is committed to creating understanding between cultures and religions – including his initiative celebrated as the "new guiding star of Hamburg" (Hamburger Abendblatt), the international theatre festival "Um alles in der Welt - Lessingtage". The Lessing Festival is always held in the period between the birthday and day of death of Gotthold Ephraim Lessing, between the end of January and the beginning of February.

The Thalia Theater is one of Germany's most successful theatres, and it performs its works at festivals and at theatres around the world. The productions have been much sought after for more than 20 years with invited guest appearances at international festivals, amongst others in New York, Beijing, Rio de Janeiro, Seoul, St. Petersburg, Moscow, Shanghai and Bogotá. Since a short time ago, selected plays at Thalia Theater have also had English subtitles. Current dates at www.thalia-theater.de/international.
