Hongdae (Hongik University) Free Market is a marketplace for young artists. The market is run in a flea market format, but while a typical flea market sells second-hand goods, this free market sells only genuinely creative artwork. Since 2002, the market has been held every Saturday and has since become the prime cultural hotspot on Hongdae street, and a venue for performances by Indie bands and different cultural events.
A free-market, not a flea-market!
Hongdae Free Market is held regularly on Saturdays on a recreation ground in front of the main entrance to Hongik University. At this art market, young artists get the opportunity to show their work or performances. The market brims with unique items and a bustling crowd. Some of the items on display include hats, shoes and t-shirts painted with interesting characters, ceramic accessories, dolls made from wire, diaries with handmade covers and many more. The sellers are all artists and the items sold here are all their own handmade artwork.
