He Garden is the best-preserved private garden in Yangzhou and a “must see” for any visitor. Its extensive plantings and buildings invoke poetic imagery at every turn. Gardening experts have dubbed the garden as “an exceptional example of South China’s gardens”.
Salt merchant He Zhidao originally bought the land in 1883 and established his home on the grounds. He used a combination of Chinese and Western architectural features when constructing his home.
