Situated just north of downtown Yangzhou, Ge Garden is an outstanding model of an elaborate private garden. The garden is among the top four gardens in China.
The garden has a rich history. A wealthy Yangzhou resident originally built the garden during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). A powerful Qing government official later fixed up and rebuilt the garden. The Qing official loved bamboo and named the newly-refurbished garden, “ Ge Garden”, after the Chinese character “(个)” (pounced “ge”), which resembles the shape of bamboo leaves.
The garden is also famous for its rock bed collection, which is different each season. Bamboo stone is used in spring, taihu stone in summer, huang stone in autumn and xuan stone in winter.
An extensive bamboo grove and a classic mansion help add to the garden’s delicate atmosphere.
