Home to the best and brightest designers
Gan Ha’hashmal, in what was once one of Tel Aviv’s most run down neighborhoods, has been transformed into one of the city’s trendiest areas, and is now home to the best and brightest fashion and jewelry designers.
The small quarter of the city is situated next door to Tel Aviv’s White City and Florentine districts, in between Allenby, Yehuda Halevy, Barzilay and Hashashmal Streets. The name Gan Ha’hashmal means ‘Electric Garden’ which refers to the fact that it was the first city neighborhood to feature a power plant, back in the 1920s.
Historical Charm meets Contemporary Fashion
Gan Ha’hashmal retains its charming original Bauhaus buildings, which have been renovated and brought back into use as studios and storefronts by Israel’s young designers. There are around two dozen boutiques and numerous cafés, including an organic hummus restaurant located in this newly fashionable area. Recently the new alternative resident crowd has been joined by established designers who have decided the area is a good place to open their own storefronts. Together the design contingency based here are known as the ‘Collective Gan Ha’hashmal’ – a local pool of talent renowned within the city.
