Built in 1912, the Former Residence of Zhan Tianyou was designed and constructed by Zhan Tianyou when he served as the deputy director and chief engineer of Han-Yue Railway and Chuan-Han Railway.
The residence sits on 920 suquare meters of land that includes a whole house, which is a two-story wood-brick European building. The house has a collection of Zhan’s belongings including a steel rail from the Beijing-Zhangjiakou Railway, a copper bell used at the Beijing-Zhangjiakou Railway, a sample box of steel, a drawing apparatus, a copybook and ink dish used by Zhan Tianyou.
Zhan’s self-drafted resume is also on display along with a replica of instruction from Yuan Shikai, who was President of the Republic of China from March 10, 1912-January 1, 1916. On the steel rail, the stamp of I.P.K.R.1905 is still clear. I stands for official, P stands for Peking, K stands for KALGAN, the Zhangjiakou region, and R stands for Railway. Zhan Tongji, Zhan Tianyou’s grandson and the first curator of Zhantianyou Memorial Hall, found the steel rail along the Beijing-Zhangjiakou Railway.
The Former Residence of Zhan Tianyou is located at No.51, Dongting Street, Jiang’an District, Wuhan, Hubei province. The residence is surrounded by local tourism attractions such as the Former Site of August 7th Meeting, Former Site of the National Government in Wuhan, and the Mausoleum of Shouyi Martyrs in the 1911 Revolution. Visitors can get there by Bus No.45.
