The Markthalle legend persists, and here in Moabit another chapter of Berlin’s colourful market history unfolds. The first impression of the Arminiusmarkthalle is often: “Did the architect really want to build a church?” Elaborate archways, floral decorations in cast iron on the pillars, a window gallery as in a basilica with gothic-style bay windows. However, looking down from the gallery, you'll see traders and not worshippers, animatedly and noisily selling their wares. The Arminiusmarkthalle was opened in 1891. It was heavily damaged in the Second World War and rebuilt in the 1950s. In 1990, the facade was restored and in 1996 the interior was expensively refurbished with many features of the historical style. The building is now under national trust protection.
