L’Aubergine Restaurant
L’Auberine restaurant is one of the favourite hang-outs of youngsters in Zamalek. On the lower floor you will discover the softly lit cosy restaurant that used to be the only vegetarian restaurant in Cairo; the tradition is well preserved but some meaty dishes have found their place on the menu. If you are not in the mood for dining and more into drinks and hanging-out, let the music guide you upstairs to the bar. Although, at first, you might feel you entered the headquarters of the younger Cairo jet set, you will soon discover that the atmosphere is quite enjoyable and very western-like.

The flagship branch of the Maison Thomas chain of restaurants is more of a historical landmark in Cairo. Located in Zamalek, the restaurant is extremely small and decorated with old pictures dating back to the early part of the 20th Century. The menu is not 10 pages long but what’s in there is delicious, especially the baguette sandwiches, the thin-crust pizzas – hard to find in Cairo – and the mouth-watering deserts.
But most of all, the reason behind Maison Thomas’ popularity is the fact that the place serves genuine pork.
