Yangshuo painted fans are a traditional handicraft. They are made with refined local materials. The framework consists of local pubescens, and its surface is made of rice paper or silk after complicated processes, including painting, staining, mounting, pasting and piercing. The paintings on the fans encompass a variety of themes, such as the landscape of Guilin and Yangshuo, flowers and birds, insects and beasts, and court ladies wearing traditional clothes. All fans are handmade by local peasant painters. Decorated with several lines of ancient Chinese poems, calligraphy works or seals of Chinese characters, the fans have become a souvenir embodying various features of traditional Chinese art. Some of the mini-fans are only about 30 centimeters, while large ones can be 1 to 2 meters.
