Located south of Guilin, Nanxi Mountain occupies an area of 22 hectares. The Nanxi Brook runs through its foothills, lending its name to the mountain itself. Nanxi Mountain is as high as 140 meters and stretches over 350 meters in length. Its northern part is high and extremely steep and with the whole mountain being white and scarcely covered in trees tress, Nanxi looks like a large white screen from a distance. People have therefore named it the “Jade Screen of Nanxi”.

Since ancient times, it has served as the gateway of southern Guilin, thus it’s also known as the south gate of Guilin. The scenery here is exceptionally beautiful after rainfall, which is partly why the mountain has been listed as one of the eight sceneries of Guilin, bearing the name of “After-Rain Nanxi”.

Nanxi Mountain is well known for its caves. There are a vast amount of caves here which form a maze-like network in Nanxi Mountain. Bailong Cave is the largest and the highest.

In 1982, Nanxi Mountain was approved by the State Council to be one of the national key scenic spots in Lijiang. In 2010 it was ranked as an AAAA scenic area. Since the Tang Dynasty (AD 618-907), a large number of writers have visited here and left as many as 180 stone inscriptions which have been listed as key cultural relics.

Nanxi Mountain is a diversified scenic area with natural landscape, cultural history and unique karst landforms. As early as 1000 years ago, it has been developed by Li Bo, prefectural governor of Guilin in Tang dynasty, making it one of the earliest tourist areas in Guilin.
