The Elephant Hill Scenic Area was established in 1986 and is one of the first national AAAA scenic sites. It was listed as “a recommended site” by the World Tourism Organization (WTO) in 2003 and is an internationally famous tourist site.
Its main tourist attractions include Elephant Trunk Hill, Water Moon Cave, Elephant Eye Rock, Puxian (Samantabhadra) Pagoda, Three Flower Wine Cellar, Love Island and Taiping Revolution Museum in Yunfeng Temple.
Elephant Trunk Hill, the main attraction in the scenic area, really does look like an elephant is taking a sip from its trunk in the river. It is situated at the converging point of Lijiang River and Peach Blossom River in Guilin. In 1995, it was rated as the symbol of Guilin for its peculiar shape and long history.
In the 2014 Chinese New Year Gala, the Hungarian shadow theater group, Attraction, took Elephant Trunk Hill as the symbol of Guilin and reeled it into their creative performance, Symbols of China. The group used their bodies to form silhouettes of images that best represent China. It was the first time that the image of the hill was used by foreign artists to showcase the beauty of China. Elephant Trunk Hill has become more than a symbol of Guilin and its scenery; it has become a symbol of the harmonious relationship between men and nature in Chinese culture.
