The Danxia Scenic Area has many accolades to its name, including being listed as a World Natural Heritage site and as “one of seven most beautiful Danxia areas in China” by the China National Geography magazine. Bajiaozhai is also known as Yuntai Mountain, which features a main peak of 818 meters above sea level and receives its name due to the eight rake angles inclined towards the main peak.
The danxia landform stretches more than 80 square kilometers. The landform has developed at a pace and to such a high grade and diversity that is rarely seen in similar formations in the world. The area had been praised as “the essence of Danxia” and “top in grade”. Vigorous and magnificent, tall and straight, the mountain is adorned with extraordinary patterns and colors.
Bajiaozhai is surrounded by steep precipices and cliffs on each of its east, west and north faces. Only along the secluded path of its southwest slope can one climb to the 3000 square meter flat at the top of the mountain (without the aid of climbing equipment). It is here that the Tiankong Temple (the Sky Temple) was built during Song and Yuan dynasties (960-1279, 1271-1368).
There are more than 130 attractions in the entire scenic area, including “Xianglong Rock”, “Qun Luo Guan Tian”, “Eye Stone”, “Longtou Incense”, “Longji Ladder” and “Plank Road along the Cliff”. Looking down at the scenic spot from the main peak, one can see lines of mounts standing at the precipitous cliff. Tourists can take themselves above a sea of clouds by climbing the mountain; a view that deemed as the peak of perfection by many visitors.
