The mountains surrounding Guilin are inhabited by the Zhuang, Miao, Yao and Dong ethnic groups, among others. Through the ages, they have protected their own cultures and inherited ancient traditions. Despite periods where such traditions seemed to be at risk of dying out altogether, the diverse customs of ethnic groups in Guilin look set to remain for many years more.
