A summer holiday looks even likelier for Brits this year, as Greece and Malta become the latest countries to lift restrictions and open their doors for holidaymakers from the UK.
A lot can change in two weeks– since the last update to Holiday Extras’ Deckchair Index, which tracks the countries that we can travel to without having to quarantine before or after visiting, that coincided with the UK government’s travel corridors announcement, even more locations have made it possible for a truly hassle-free holiday, kickstarting holiday bookings for the summer and taking the Deckchair Index to 69%.
With flights now running from the UK to all over Europe, and an abundance of destination choices now available for holidaymakers looking to book this summer, holidays are almost back to pre-lockdown levels of normality.
Seamus McCauley from Holiday Extras said: “Pretty much everywhere in Europe is open now – being unable to fly somewhere is increasingly the exception rather than the rule. So we still can’t go to Cyprus, or to Belgium if we’re starting from Leicester (or, to be fair to Leicester, any other region subject to a local lockdown). Georgia and Moldova are still essentially closed. Further away, New Zealand is closed to keep the virus out; the USA to keep it in. But the list of places we can go now includes pretty much all of the UK’s top holiday destinations – Spain, France, Greece, Italy, Turkey, Malta have all opened their doors for the summer. Holidays are back on this summer, and we’re definitely seeing our customers take advantage of it.”
