For visitors who come to Berlin’s Arminius Markthalle for the first time, they often asked themselves a question, “Am I inside a church?” In Arminius Markthalle, the interior design consisted of curved dome, wrought iron decoration on the pillars, and the Gothic windows are just like the one in a church. However, when visitors look down at the ground, they will find this beautiful building crowded with venders busy selling stuffs.
The development of Arminius Market reflects the history of Berlin’s markets. Arminius Markthalle was opened to the public in 1891. The hall was destroyed during the WWII, and was reconstructed in 1950s. Berlin renovated the façade of the hall in 1990, and carried out costly internal renovations in 1996. Although Arminius Markthalle has been reconstructed for many times, each time the construction was strictly in accordance with the old principles. Today, Arminius Markthalle has become a protected heritage building.
