Table Mountain, which was voted one of the New Seven Wonders of the World in 2011, is one of the city’s most popular attractions – both with locals and visitors. Since it first opened in 1929, the Table Mountain Cable Way has attracted 24-million visitors.
But the mountain is not just a pretty picture, it is also home to the richest, yet smallest floral kingdom on earth. The 57-square- kilometer area comprising Table Mountain and the Back Table is home to more than 1470 floral species, many of them endemic to the area. It is also home to a number of animal species, including dassies, mongooses, snakes and tortoises.
Locals often bypass the cable-way and opt to hike to the top of the mountain with Platteklip Gorge – a popular, and rigorous scramble to the table top. The route offers incredible views of Camps Bay, but be warned it can take as much as four hours to the top!
