NEW YORK (AP) -- New York City and New Jersey announced travel bans, airlines canceled thousands of flights and even Broadway shows were canceled Sunday evening as a fierce winter storm bore down on the Northeastern U.S.

"It's been a while since we've had a major nor'easter and major blizzard of this magnitude across the Northeast," said Cody Snell, a meteorologist at the service's Weather Prediction Center. "This is definitely a major winter storm and a major impact for this part of the country."

Nearly 6,000 flights in and out of the United States were canceled for Monday, according to the flight tracking website FlightAware. More than 90% of flights were canceled out of New York JFK, LaGuardia, Newark and Boston Logan, and 43% of flights were canceled from Washington's Regan National.

Public transit also was suspended in some areas.

"The combination of heavy snowfall and strong winds will continue to produce blizzard conditions along the Northeastern Seaboard," the weather service said Monday. "Sharply reduced visibility will make travel extremely treacherous across these areas."

Blizzard warnings stretched from Maryland to Maine. Cellphones across New York City received wailing push alerts Sunday night announcing a ban on non-emergency travel on all streets through noon Monday because of “dangerous blizzard conditions.” Rhode Island and New Jersey implemented similar restrictions.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced a ban on non-emergency travel on all streets from 9 p.m. Eastern Sunday through noon Monday, with travel restrictions planned in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and elsewhere in the region. Regional airports canceled flights ahead of the storm, and even DoorDash announced it was suspending deliveries in the city overnight.

To the south, landmarks such as the Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, D.C., announced closures Monday.

How much snow?

Snow fell at a rate of 2 to 3 inches an hour early Monday from New York through Massachusetts. Some areas have gotten well over a foot of snow since Sunday, along with wind gusts of over 30 mph and low visibility.
