Bangka Belitung is one of the Indonesian provinces with strong influence of Malayan ethnic, culture, religion, and art. Dambus is one of Bangka Belitung’s arts which is still currently popular.

Dambus consists of musical instruments, Dambus songs, and traditional dances. The musical instrument used in Dambus originally originated from Bangka Belitung and is shaped like a guitar. It consists of a deer head-shaped head, string, and Dambus’s body. The Dambus music instrument has been found a long time ago in Malaya culture. However, as times went on, Bangka Belitung’s Dambus has created its own characteristics. Its tone is suitable for Malayan music.

Dambus music itself is created by the Bangka citizens. The lyrics, written in Malayan language, portray Malayan culture and contain some cultural norms and religious value. This song is accompanied by Dambus music coming from its musical instrument.

In addition, this music is usually accompanied by a Malayan traditional dance. Because it accompanies Dambus music, the dance is called “Dincak Dambus.” The dancers, fully dressed, move so beautifully and cheerfully. Bangka Belitung citizens wanted to maintain Dambus so that this traditional dance was created in order to make various Dambus which can be performed in special events. So far, there are a lot of dance studios which perpetuate this art.

Dambus is usually performed at certain events, such as cultural ceremonies, wedding parties, or even during some competition and festivals, both national and international. That is a reason why Dambus become a Bangka Belitung’s outstanding art.
