Sun Island Scenic Area is a small river island on the northern bank of the Songhuajiang River in Harbin City. It is a quiet and elegant place full of beautiful flowers and green trees. Situated in its north is Sun Island Park which features multiple small flora and fauna zones and landscape lakes. In the south of the area are art galleries and Russian-style architecture.
It is convenient to come to Sun Island from the down area of Harbin. You can take a ferry or go on a cross-river cableway beside the Songhuajiang River. No fees are needed if you just get on the island. However, you need to buy a ticket to enter the scenic area. It usually takes half a day for you to explore the area. The area has a flower garden with a wide variety of plants and a lilacs garden, which is perfect for appreciating flowers and having an outing during spring, taking a getaway in summer, taking photos, and going for a walk.
Most people like to walk in the area. You can have a picnic, ride a bike, row a boat, and take a close look at interesting squirrels on the Squirrel Island, and watch swans, mandarin ducks, swan geese, and other beautiful birds that live on the Swan Lake. If you bring children, you can go to Bear Park to experience amusement rides such as the merry-go-round and bumper cars.
The Ice and Snow Art Gallery is a famous venue here. Even in summer, you can appreciate ice sculptures of Buddha statues and ancient buildings and play on ice slides and in ice mazes. Moreover, you can visit cultural attractions and exhibition halls such as the Memorial Park of the Northeastern Anti-Japanese United Army, Sun Island Art Gallery, Yu Qingcheng Statue Park, Museum of Northern Folk Art, Yu Zhixue Art Gallery, and Russian Art Gallery.
With a passport-styled ticket, you can enter the Russian Town to watch various Russian country villas and residences. In the evening, you can watch Russian dancing and singing performances and taste Russian food in the Russian Royal Golden Theater.
Each year, from December to January, Sun Island Scenic Area is the main venue for the International Snow Sculpture Art Fair. During this period, the snow-white area is full of various vivid art works made of snow, such as figure sculptures, animal sculptures and Western buildings.
