Depending on whether your flight arrives at Domodedovo International or Sheremetyevo International, you'll either be pleasantly surprised or wondering just what you've got yourself into. The former is recently renovated, clean, modern and efficient. The latter, originally built for the Moscow Olympics and long due for an overhaul. Both airports are about 20 miles (30km) from the city center, Sheremetyevo to the North-West and Domodedovo to the South-East.

Moscow Domodedovo Airport

Moscow Domodedovo Airport is the largest airport of Russia and Eastern Europe in terms of passenger traffic. In 2014, total passenger traffic of the airport amounted to 33,039,531 people. Domodedovo Airport falls into the category of the largest airports in Europe according to the ACI Europe classification.

Today, 86 airlines, including 42 international operators, 28 Russian and 16 air carriers of the CIS countries, are operating regular flights to Domodedovo. Flights from Domodedovo Airport are operated in 229 destinations, 85 of which are unique for the Moscow region: journey to them is accessible only from Domodedovo.

Sheremetyevo International Airport

Sheremetyevo International Airport is the largest Russian airport handling scheduled international flights. The Airport’s network of routes includes more than 300 destinations. The Sheremetyevo Airport’s services are utilized by the representatives of three major aviation alliances: SkyTeam (Air France, KLM, Delta, CSA Czech Airlines, Alitalia, China Southern Airlines, Korean Air, etc.); Star Alliance (SAS, Air China, LOT, Adria Airways, etc.); Oneworld (Finnair).

Intensive development and large-scale modernization of the infrastructure began at Sheremetyevo Airport in 2005. As a result of this upgrade, a number of the passenger terminals increased from two to six, and their annual handling capacity — from 12 to 35 million passengers. Sheremetyevo Airport has become the biggest Russian airport complex (its area is about 480,000 sq. m).

Transportation: High-speed trains ”Aeroexpress” depart from Sheremetyevo Airport to Belorussky Railway station every 20-30 minutes; you can get to the airport by taking buses and shuttle buses from Rechnoyvokzal, Planernaya and Leninskiyprospekt (night route bus) metro stations.
