Mt. Moiwa, reaching an altitude of 531 meters, is located in the middle of Sapporo city. The name of the mountain is “inkarushibe” in the Ainu language and this mountain was once a sacred place for the Ainu people. From the summit visitors can view a spectacular panorama of the streets of Sapporo, Ishikari Bay in the Sea of Japan and Shokanbetsu Peak located in Mashike town .
Visitors can use the ropeway or the Mt. Moiwa Sightseeing Road from the foot of the mountain to half way up. Once mid-way, visitors may ride the “Morris Car”, the world’s first drive-type mini cable car to the summit. This mountain is a popular climbing destination for the citizens of Sapporo: the five mountain trails (shortest 2.4km; longest 4.5km) are hike-able in casual clothing and are popular with mountain climbers during the summer weekends.
