At the birthplace of beer making in Japan
Shopping without concern for the weather
This commercial facility stands where the former “Hokkaido Development Commission Brewery”, built by the Hokkaido Development Commission in 1876, once stood. The Hokkaido Development Commission Brewery was the first brewery to be made by the Japanese. The building is divided into seven areas. What gives it character is the “Atrium”, which is similar to a large greenhouse.
There is an open ceiling from the basement to the fourth floor and visitors can enjoy shopping at the various outdoor, variety and interior goods stores. From November to the end of December a huge Christmas tree is brought over from Hiroo Town in the Tokachi area and is decorated and lit with illumination. Visitors can also enjoy tasting beer that was made during the start of the brewery for \250 at the Sapporo Development Beer Store in the Entotsu (Chimney) Square area.
