Odori area is “The City” of Sapporo
The Odori Area is famous for its rows of long-established stores founded in Sapporo , department stores and fashion buildings. The Sapporo no.1 street, which includes the area from Minami 1-jyo Nishi 1-chome through 3-chome, is the shopping district with the oldest history. It opened in 1872 with the founding of “Maruiimai”, a department store and “Ichinoakino Souhonten Yakkyoku”, a pharmacy. The Odori Area comprises of six shopping districts; the no.1 street, along with Sapporo no.2, no.3 and no.4 streets which coverss the area from Odori through Minami 4-jyo Nishi 1-chome to 4-chome, the “Tanukikoji Shopping Arcade” that has a long arcade from Minami 3-jyo Nishi 1-chome to 7-chome, and “Sapporo Underground Shopping Malls” which has 2 shopping centers. The no.1 and no.4 streets occasionally become pedestrian precincts where cars are kept off the streets with events taking place. The performance carnival “Dai Don Den” takes place at the end of August.
