Nature-rich Hokkaido has been the stage of over 400 films shot since before World War II. Nearly every year, new films are shot in Hokkaido. The NPO Northern Museum of Visual Culture collects data on films shot in Hokkaido and makes it available to the public. The Museum collection includes 16mm film projectors, giant 35mm film projectors from the 1970s, 8mm films, and promotional film posters.

The complete postwar issues of Kinema Junpō and books are available for the public to browse and approximately 50 narrative and documentary films shot in Hokkaido are also available for viewing. The Northern Museum of Visual Culture is a great destination for those wanting to see more than Sapporo’s tourist sites.
