Among the buildings on the Hokkaido University campus, the Museum exudes the most formidable presence and sense of history. Since its completion in 1929 until 1999, the building was used as the main building of the Science Department. The Museum’s collection includes over 4million documents and specimens, which it collected, archived, and researched, since the University opened as the Sapporo Agricultural School over 130 years ago.
Many intriguing instruments, such as a seismograph, which will even respond to light footsteps, and an artificial cloud maker, which was created by Dr. Ukichiro Nakaya, who is bets known for the phrase, “snow is a letter from heaven” are displayed in the Museum. It also holds workshops and seminars for lifelong learning.
