Hokkaido University’s motto is “boys, be ambitious!” Its campus is full of ambition, history, and nature.
Hokkaido University first opened as Sapporo Agricultural College in 1876. Its historical buildings and elm and gingko trees draw many tourists. The “Elm Forest” located to the left of the main entrance of the University was once the sericulture classroom and is now an information center. We recommend getting a campus map here before walking through the campus. The campus is large and one can easily make a day of walking through it. The Hokkaido University Museum, which is free, is not to be missed. Here, one can see fossils of nipponosaurus and specimens of cattle skeletal structure. The photograph shows the main building of the Agricultural Studies Department, which carries on the legacy of the Sapporo Agricultural College.
