Guanlin, or Guan Forest, is said to be the place where general Guan Yu's head was buried. He was Shu Kingdom's general of the Three Kingdom period (220-280).
Guanlin is bordered by a temple on the south and a tomb on the north. It is located in Guanlin County, 7 km south of Luoyang, Henan Province. The construction of the temple and the planting of the pines in Guanlin started during the reign of Emperor Wanli (1573-1620) in the Ming Dynasty.
The construction was further enlarged and finished during the reign of Emperor Qianlong (1711-1799) in the Qing Dynasty.
Guanlin covers a total area of about 7 hectares. It is a hot tourist destination in Luoyang.
The old Luoyang city which was used during the Han Dynasty (202 BCE-220) sits just east of Baima Temple, 15 km east of today's Luoyang.
In the Zhou Dynasty (1100 BC-256 BCE), the city was known as Chengzhou City, which served as the capital for four dynasties: East Han (25-220), Wei Kingdom (220-266), West Jin (266-316), and North Wei (386-557).
The city was enlarged after Emperor Guangwu of East Han decided to move the capital to Luoyang, which was by then quite a magnificent city.
The construction of this awe-inspiring city reached an unprecedented level, making Luoyang a world-renowned city during that time.
