Hangu Pass of the Han Dynasty Introduction: Hangu Pass is one of the oldest passes in ancient China. “Hangu” means valley resembling an envelope. Hangu Pass is between two narrow mountains, which made it look like an envelope. The pass was the site of many ancient battles and the renowned Chinese philosopher Lao-tzu drew inspiration from here for the Taoism Classic “Tao Te Ching”. For more than 1,000 years, many Taoists from China and elsewhere flocked to the pass on their pilgrimages.
