Yueju Opera - employing the Cantonese dialect as its medium of expression, and prevalent throughout Guangdong and Guangxi Province, Hong Kong and Macau – dates back some 300 years.
Yueju Opera is the most influential opera in Southern China and is the only opera performance to employ dialects apart from Peking Opera.
Listed as a 'Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity' by UNESCO in September 2009, Yueju Opera is venerated by both the local and overseas Cantonese community, serving as a platform for social communication and strengthening relationships within the Chinese community.
In addition, it is recognized as a symbol of cultural exchange, and is an important medium for foreigners to further learn about and understand Chinese culture.
