Butterfly Valley lies in the Sanya Yalong Bay National Tourism Resort, at the foot of the mountain, about 2 km from Yalong Bay Central Square. Deep in the primitive tropical forest, it is surrounded on three sides by mountains. Yalong Bay Butterfly Valley is home to thousands of bright-colored beautiful butterflies and is the first park in China that features a butterfly exhibit, along side education, and tourism.
Covering an area of 1.5 hectares, Butterfly Valley boasts a large ecological butterfly garden and a museum that houses over 2,000 rare specimens of butterflies and insects, including the specimen of the only kind of insect under first class national protection—the Teinopalpusaureus, which is worth tens of thousands of dollars. Located in a tropical semi-deciduous monsoon forest, the valley is home to more than 360 kinds of plants, including the rare Dracaena draco (dragon tree) and others like Entadaphaseoloides, fragrant Albizia, and Cleistocalyxoperculatus. Many of the plantations are natural hosts of butterflies, such as Passiflorafoetida, Aristolochiadebilis, camphor tree, Rhododendron wardii, kassod tree, wampee, banian, oleander and so on.
