First mentioned in chronicals of 1483 as St.Bērtulis Church, set on the grounds of the present building. Damaged during the Livonian War (1558) and Polish-Swedish wars. It was the only operating church in the area between 1965 and 1990, shared by members of various religions. The belfry was erected in 1930, according to a project by architect K. Pēkšēns.
