Mokpo Maritime Cultural Festival 2013 starts August 2

The Mokpo Maritime Cultural Festival 2013 will take place at the area around Samhakdo Island, in Mokpo-si, Jeollanam-do from August 2 to 6, 2013.

Celebrating its 8th year, the festival aims to introduce Mokpo City’s maritime culture and history to audiences at home and abroad. This year, the festival’s most representative programs include gilnori* (road parade), pasi (seasonal fish market), a marine fireworks show, and a lamp exhibit of 1,897 kinds of fish (to commemorate Mokpo Port’s establishment in 1897). In addition, there will be a special exhibit on Mokpo maritime culture, a rock concert, dance performances, and water-themed hands-on activities.

Admission to the festival is free of charge. However, there will be a 2,000 won admission fee to the seasonal fish market.

*Gilnori – an opening parade consisting of street performances featuring Korean traditional music. At the Mokpo Maritime Cultural Festival, this is one of ceremonies to wish for a big catch.
