The 27-gate facility is built to handle up to 11 million passengers annually. It will serve as an extension to Munich’s Terminal 2, and will be accessed via a short train ride from that terminal building.
The $1 billion project was financed on a 60/40 split between Munich Airport and Lufthansa. The satellite terminal will service Lufthansa passengers as well as passengers on other Star Alliance airlines, including United.
Construction on the terminal began in 2012. It features 15 retail areas, seven restaurants and three duty-free zones. The terminal’s central marketplace was designed to receive lots of natural light and is a tribute to the Viktualienmarkt, Munich’s central open-air market.
