Expert Unveils 6 Crucial Tips On Proper Airbnb Etiquette

It’s so very easy to mind your manners – although many travelers find some difficulty in the concept. However, what is one to do when enjoying a relatively new innovation where the rules aren't so widely known?

Sharon Schweitzer, J.D., founder of Protocol & Etiquette Worldwide, was nice enough to offer TravelPulse readers a few insights into Airbnb.

Schweitzer is described on her website as a, “A cross-cultural consultant, business etiquette expert and best-selling and international award-winning author.”

Her company hopes to help companies and entrepreneurs with matters of business etiquette and proper protocol on an international stage as an outlet that will not only answer questions but ensure everyone has the proper tools to wade through the global marketplace.

Consider the following list of six items a trove of best practices that will have you and your host on the best of terms as you leave your temporary oasis and to hopefully infuse your next Airbnb sojourn with a bit more class.

Here are some tips as provided by Schweitzer:

1. Don’t go at a glance: Some hosts note stipulations such as specific check-in times or guest limitations, so verify that the lodging suits your travel plans. Look closely at the accommodations as well. A room listed for two or more travelers may have just one bed, so be sure to look at pictures or ask the host if you’re unsure about what amenities are included.

2. Keep an eye on time: Your hosts probably have their own weekend plans, so be courteous by arriving as close to the check-in time as possible. If the listing doesn’t include a specific time, contact your host in advance with your itinerary so that they can be there to welcome you when you arrive. If you aren’t familiar with the area, determine directions to the residence at least 24 hours in advance.

3. Tidy up: Airbnb is just like everything else in life - leave your space cleaner than it was when you found it! Keep in mind that you’re staying in someone’s home, so remember to rinse your toothpaste out of the sink, clean up your trash, and make your bed before you leave. Airbnb hosts clean the rooms and bedsheets between stays, and they will appreciate your efforts to tidy up (which may result in better reviews)!

4. Be considerate: In the excitement of discoveries in a new city, it’s easy to forget simple courtesies like entering the residency discreetly, turning down your music, or refraining from using the kitchen late at night. Always remember that you are a guest in someone else’s home, and strive to be as gracious and amicable as possible.

5. Say goodbye with grace: Writing a great review of a stellar experience is one way to express appreciation for a warm welcome. When staying for an extended period of time, or if you have become friendly with your hosts, consider leaving a little something before you drop the key in the mailbox. A small treat from the local bakery or thank-you note written on a postcard from your hometown are memorable ways to show your gratitude.

6. Tipping: While a tip is not required for the owners, you may leave a small tip for the housekeeper if you wish. Suggested amounts include $USD2.00 -5.00 per day, for the maid depending on the size of the AirBnB. Designate the gratuity with a short handwritten note and leave it on the nightstand. International gratuities vary depending on country culture so research your destination.

Much of the above is common sense for people who are used to being courteous anyway.

As you are renting out what amounts to private property from non-commercial hosts, minding your manners becomes of utmost importance. Really, it's just about treating that pool house, apartment or home as if it were your own.

You, too, would want everything as clean as possible and the noise to be at a minimum during the rental period if it were you as the gracious host.
