The Bass – a contemporary art museum on Miami Beach – has been given a reopening date of 8 October following a US$12m (€10.7m, £9.3m) renovation headed by project architects David Gauld and Arata Isozaki.

First opened in 1964 inside the Russell Pancoast-designed former Miami Beach Public Library and Art Center, the then Bass Museum of Art has been in operation ever since, with the institution focusing on exhibitions of international contemporary art.

The original museum building underwent a renovation in 2001, with a new wing also designed by Isozaki added to house galleries, offices and a museum shop.

The new renovation expands the internal structure by 47 per cent, adding 4,100sq ft (380sq m) to the existing 8,700sq ft (808sq m) space, including three new galleries, a new museum store and café, and a designated education facility to better serve expanded programs and increased attendance. A new 5,200sq ft (483sq m) Creativity Centre will also include education spaces, visitor spaces, administrative offices and a multimedia lab. There will also be an enclosed courtyard for special events.

Good Evening Beautiful Blue, a retrospective of work by Swiss-born multimedia artist Ugo Rondinone, will be on display for the opening, along with Beautiful, featuring work created over the last decade by artist Pascale Marthine Tayou and objects from the museum’s permanent collection, donated by its namesakes Johanna and John Bass.
