Frontier Airlines will launch service from Newark Liberty airport this fall with 15 nonstop routes, filling a low-cost carrier void that will be left when Southwest exits the airport in November.
Frontier said it would take over slots that Southwest is dropping. Southwest currently offers up to 20 departures per day to 10 cities.
Frontier's Newark push includes two international destinations, Cancun and Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, launching in spring 2020. The other nonstop flights are to Las Vegas, Orlando, Miami and San Juan, starting Nov. 14, and Palm Beach, Phoenix and Atlanta starting Dec. 10.
The carrier will later launch Tampa; Denver; Dallas; Chicago; Raleigh, N.C.; and what Frontier says is the only nonstop, cross-country service to Ontario, Calif., all in spring 2020.
Frontier said its Newark flights would operate "entirely outside the delay prone afternoon hours."
