Asam Laksa from Penang has helped propel Malaysian cuisine to become international cuisine. In 2011, it was ranked 7th among the 50 most delicious foods chosen by CNN. Those who come to the city but haven’t tried this dish are like those who have been to the mountain of treasures but haven’t received anything valuable. The soup of the dish is mainly stewed with fish, along with lemongrass, chili and tamarind. Pour the sour and spicy fish soup on to the Laifen (a kind of rice vermicelli), onion, sliced cucumber, lettuce, pear, and sliced ginger flower, place sliced red chili and Zhitianjiao (a kind of chili) into the soup, and finally add a spoon of shrimp paste to the soup. The specially made shrimp paste is the reason why Penang Asam Laksa is much more delicious than the dish in other states.
