The Six Flags amusement park company has announced a signed letter of agreement with officials in Chongqing, China, for the construction of a theme park in the city.
The amusement park in Chongqing would be Six Flags’ second facility in China.
According to the South China Morning Post, Six Flags has teamed with Chinese real estate developer Riverside Investment Group Co. as part of Chongqing’s effort to expand the city’s appeal as a tourism destination.
The new Six Flags project is expected to include a theme park and a water park in Bishan, which is a district of Chongqing with a surrounding population of 120 million. The site was chosen following an evaluation that included a focus on accessibility and proximity to population.
Chongqing officials originally bid on a construction project with Disney, but to no avail thus far.
City officials also admitted that attracting a company like Six Flags is just step one, as the area is looking to grow into a “magnet for several other national and global giants.” Six Flags’ other Chinese project in Haiyan started construction in January and is expected to open to the public in 2019.
“Developing two parks in Chongqing, the most populous municipality in China, is another step forward in executing our long-term strategy to expand our brand outside of North America and bring Six Flags thrills to millions of new guests,” Six Flags CEO John Duffey said in a statement.
