Macao received two red pandas this November from China, a male and a female. They travelled from the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding to arrive at their new home, the Seac Pai Van Panda Pavilion.
The three-year-old pandas are subject to a 30-day quarantine and visiting times have not yet been scheduled for the general public.
They join Giant Panda parents Hoi Hoi and Sam Sam and their twin cubs Kin Kin and Hong Hong, who already live at the 3,000sqm state-of-the-art pavilion. Hoi Hoi and Sam Sam were given to Macau to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the SAR’s handover to China by the Mainland Chinese government.
Giant pandas are an endangered species and according to the facility, Macau’s are four of just 320 living in captivity in breeding centres and zoos, with only 1600 remaining in the wild.
Mainland China has categorised Red Pandas as Class II protected species. The pair arrived in Macao in good condition and are likely to be named following their quarantine. They will be a welcome addition to the non-gaming, family friendly activities available to visitors and residents alike in Macao.
