Nice, the capital of the French Riviera is a representative resort of azure coasts, the warm and moist climate, laid back atmosphere, wailing along the British seaside Avenue (Promenadedes Anglais) to beautiful angel Angel Bay (la Baiedes Anges), looking at the sea with a refreshing blue color. History and Culture
Nice city was built in 350 BC, becoming one of the busiest trading posts in Riviera Ligure. During the 7th century, Nice joined the Genoa alliance which was created by the cities of Liguria. During the middle ages, Nice, as well as most Italian cities, suffered from the disasters of war. In 13th and 14th centuries, Nice became the Duke’s territory of Provence several times. In 1388, it turned into the Duke’s territory of Savoy. In 1543, Nice was attacked by French and Turkish allies and France gained ownership of Nice. In 1600, Nice fell into the hands of Duke of Guise. Then in 1696, Nice was in the possession of Duke Savoy. In 1705, Nice was returned back to France. Then in the following two hundreds of years, Nice changed its owner constantly. In 1860, the French Napoleon III signed a contract with the king of Sardinia, thus making Nice a French territory up until today. A lot of traditional culture and art has been preserved in Nice especially folk music and folk dance. The most famous dance is francs dole.
Natural Environment
It is warm in winter and cool in summer, sunny all year round in Nice. Usually, May, June as well as September and October are the best seasons. In addition, there is a carnival in February, lavender bloom in July and August, all fit for leisure and vacation.
Climate
Nice is one of the warmest cities in mainland France. It has a pleasant climate all the year round, warm in winter and cool in summer, belonging to typical Mediterranean climate. It rarely freezes in the winter time, almost no snow, and sometimes the temperature can reach to 20°C. On March, 2nd, 2007, the peak temperature reached 26°C. Nice’s three sides are surrounded by mountains and one side faces the sea through a 7.5 mile coastline. The mountains provide Nice with a barrier against the cold north wind. The coastal land also makes Nice a sunny place all year round. Usually May and June as well as September and October are the best seasons. In addition, there is a carnival in February, lavender bloom in July and August, suitable for leisure and vacation. From April to October, parts of the beaches in Nice are free of charge; you can also take this opportunity to feel the French kiss of sunshine.
