Melbourne is located in the southeast of Australia, capital city of the Australian state of Victoria, and is known as the “Garden State.” The winding Yarra River passes through the city. The buildings, lined on both sides, will make you think that there is an era collision between the classical buildings of Victoria style and the futuristic skyscrapers at any time. The beautiful natural scenery and diverse cultural art are in front of you. This city, known as the “cultural capital of Australia,” has attracted travelers from all over the world, reasons range from the country’s glorious history of human culture to its tempting entertainment & food.
History of Melbourne
In 1835, an Englishman John Batman sailed upriver, against the flow. He was accepted by the wide Yarra River. The lush land on the shore attracted the attention of this real estate speculator, here met eight Wurundjeri elders and purchased about 600,000 hectares of land from them. In the traditional culture of the aboriginal peoples of Australia, there was not a concept of land sale. So in this trading the original owners of this piece of land only got the hand tools, flour and clothes in exchange. This land was Melbourne, later which was named by the British Prime Minister, Mr. Melbourne.
In 1840, there were about 10,000 European colonists in the Melbourne area. The gold miners built a city on the wealth of gold and the brilliance continued until 1880s. After the World War II, the social structure of Melbourne was greatly enriched due to a large number of foreign immigrants and culture. The upsurge of construction and expansion made the city’s appearance change dramatically. All of these made modern Melbourne what we see today.
