City Introduction

Renowned as the birthplace of Tai Chi, Jiaozuo is a famous tourist destination.

Jiaozuo enjoys abundant and unique tourism resources. This is where Taihang Mountains stop and create precipitous cliffs and deep gorges. Yuntai Mountain Global Geopark is a world famous scenic area consists of Yuntai Mountain, Qingtian River, Shennong Mountain, Fenglin Gorge, and Qinglong Gorge. All these mountains and rivers come together create magnificent geological landscape.

Jiaozuo is culturally endowed. The city not only emerges as the birthplace of Tai Chi, but it is also home to a variety of schools of thoughts and distinguished historical and cultural celebrities such as Sima Yi, Han Yu, Li Shangyin, Zhu Zaiyu etc. Yueshan Temple is the birthplace of Bajiquan and is one of the four famous temples in Henan Province. Jiaying Taoist Temple, also known as small Forbidden City, was built when Emperor Qianlong harnessed the Yellow River. The tower in Miaole Temple, which was built during the period of the five Dynasties stores Sarira. All of these carry profound historical value.

Ever since 1949, Jiaozuo has always been on the top rank of grain production in China. The Four Huaiqing Chinese Medicines including Shanyao, Niuhuang, Niuxi, Juhua enjoy worldwide reputation. In 2015, the entire city received over 37.4 million tourists both at home and abroad with the total tourist income of over 30 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 13.41% and 15.36% respectively. The tourism industry income accounts for 15.64% of GDP. Jiaozuo has become a heated destination for tourists not only within Henan, but also in China.

History

Jiaozuo has a long history. As early as 8,000 years ago when the Period of Clan Commune existed, Jiaozuo was inhabited by human beings. In the Eastern Zhou Dynasty, Jiaozuo was under the administration of the Central Government. In the Han Dynasty, Jiao was called Henei Prefecture. After the Tang Dynasty, Jiaozuo was named Huaizhou, Huaimenglu, and Huaiqingfu.

In 1956, Jiaozuo was founded as a city.

In February, 2006, UN World Tourism Evaluation Center granted Jiaozuo the honor of “Worldwide Outstanding Tourism Service Brand,” thus making Jiaozuo the first Chinese city to win the honor.

Having won titles such as Chinese Excellent Tourism City and National Garden City, Jiaozuo is striving to turn itself into an internationally famous tourism city.

Natural Environment

Located in the northwest of Henan Province, Jiaozuo borders Shanxi Province at the northern end of the Taihang Mountains and overlooks Zhengzhou and Luoyang across the Yellow River. Spanning a long and narrow distance horizontally, it neighbors Xinxiang to the east and Jiyuan to the west. It sits at the coordinates 35°15N and 113°15′E. Its landscape exhibits an obvious feature of stepwise regression from the mountainous area in the north to Qin River Alluvial Plain in the south. Jiaozuo has complex topography, and its landform features (from north to the south) are: mountainous area - hilly area - diluvial plain with mountains looming behind - low-lying area - Xunfeng Mountain downland -Qin River flood land - Yellow and Qin River alluvial plain and ancient Yellow River flood land - Qingfeng Mountain down land - Yellow River flood land (ribbon-shaped diluvial plain of Yellow River).
