【Introduction】:Custom and Religion
Buddhism was introduced into Tong’an in the Sui Dynasty, and spread to Xiamen Island in the middle of the Tang Dynasty (842-857). In the middle period of the Tang Dynasty, the first Taoist temple was built in Tong’an, and in the early period of the Ming Dynasty, the City God’s Temple was built in Xiamen Island. During the process of transmission, Taoism showed out its blending trait of common myths with civil miscellaneous god worship. Catholicism was introduced into Xiamen in the reign of Chongzhen of the Ming Dynasty. Christianism was brought into Xiamen in the 22th year in the reign of Daoguang of the Qing Dynasty (1842). In the middle period of the Qing Dynasty, Islamism was also spread into Xiamen as the population of Muslims in Xiamen grew continuously.
