The original currency in Germany was the German marks. After joining the EU, the euro became the legal tender in Germany; the German mark is out of circulation.

There are seven kinds of face value of the euro banknotes, respectively, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, and 500. There are 8 kinds of face value of the euro coins: 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50 cents, 1 Euro, and 2 Euro. At present, 1 euro equals 1.05 USD (March 2017).
