Yu Garden

Yu Garden is located in the northeast of Shanghai Old City Area with Fuyou Road to the north, Anren Street to the east, and connected with Town Heaven’s Temple and Yu Garden Tourist Mart in the southwest. This ancient property is the only Ming garden in the northern part of the Old City. It enjoys the reputation— “A Top Attraction of Uniqueness and Beauty in Jiangnan”, and here you can see various pavilions and buildings, steep and lofty stones and mountains, and glittering lakes as well. This garden was once owned by a Ming dynasty official. Built in 1559, the 30-acre garden has been around for over four centuries. It boasts over 40 ingeniously conceived, well laid out ancient buildings, which have interesting names like Iron Panther, Moon Tower and Hearing-Waves Pavilion. With its pavilions, artificial mountains and ponds, it’s widely advertised as a gem of classic Chinese gardens which well reflects the architectural styles of Jiangnan gardens in Ming Dynasty. As one of the four national cultural markets, it enjoys equal popularity with Beijing Panjiayuan Flea Market, the Azure Stone Workshop and Nanjing Confucius Temple.
