Hangzhou is located at the southernmost point of Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal, and the Hangzhou section owns most abundant historical relics and most profound cultural deposits.
The Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal began to be constructed in the Spring and Autumn Period (770-476 B.C.), covering a history of 2400 years. It’s a kind of precious material and spiritual wealth from our ancestors to us; and it’s a living and flowing human heritage of great importance. The Grand Canal is both a golden name card for the tourism of Hangzhou and a classic destination to experience the culture of the watery town. The canal flows through the prosperous and refined place of Qiantang, and notes the vicissitudes of the flourishing ancient city and the phenomena of common people’s lives. No matter walking and traveling by boat, or riding a bicycle and taking a rest, you can feel and touch the sense of prosperous but not impetuous canal in Hangzhou section, and enjoy the beauty of elegance everywhere along the canal.
On June 22, 2014, the project of the Grand Canal of China was officially listed in the World Heritage List.
